Almost Famous

I look like Maddox. Do you think Angelina and Brad would adopt me?

I want to travel around the world, go to a French school (until I have to travel around the world), and be in People magazine (my new parents would get paid for those photos).

Maddox and I could hang out. It'd be cool. But don't think I'd be a babysitter for the rest of them. That's not happening.

Still, I could hang.

If you want to know the truth, there was simply only one way I could ever rebel against Mom and Dad. The other kids thought I was lucky: I could cuss in front of my parents, smoke pot, ridicule my teachers with impunity. The one thing I couldn't do was get a rise out of my folks. While my friends' parents were tearing out their hair dealing with their problem children, and my friends received extra attention and incentives to behave, I could do no wrong in my parents' eyes.

I had to wait until I turned 18 before I could really piss them off. That year, I started voting Republican.

Luke is happy right now, sort of. He's with his mom and dad at the same time. This hasn't happened in awhile. Mom and dad are separated.

One day his parents told Luke they couldn't live together any more. They told him he'd be living with his mom, and that he would stay with his dad once a week. They told him it would be like a mini vacation because he would have fun with both parents. They told Luke it wasn't his fault, and they both loved him no matter what.

That night, Luke went to bed. He thought about what he was told. He thought about all the times he heard his parents fighting. He thought about how he could use this to get the stuff he wanted. He thought about crying. He thought about how he wanted a happy family. He thought until his head hurt, and he fell asleep.

After a few months of living with just mom and visiting dad, he was okay. He had a room in each house filled with toys, and friends in both places. He knew he loved his mom and his dad. Then his parents said they were going on a family trip to an amusement park. Together.

Luke didn't know what to think.
