Penguin

"Hey, mom! Look, I made a penguin!"

"Wow! That's a really good penguin. How did you make it?

"Out of clay. I even baked it in a kiln."

"Why did you choose a penguin?"

"Well, first, I think they're really awesome. Then, my teacher told us about how the earth is getting warmer, and she told us how things are melting and that's hurting all the living things. So, I wanted to make something important."

"That's wonderful! You did a great job. Your father just pulled in. Put your penguin on the table so you can show him."

"Hi, daddy! Look what I made!"

"Hi, honey. No! Don't put the bags down there!"

The penguin was crushed under a pile of paper and plastic bags.

Kiki Was Warned

"There aren't any penguins under there," she said to the twins. "Get up off the ground."

Kiki hated seeing the twins dirty, and she hated when they got mud all over the Lexus. She didn't think there was a decent car wash in all of South America. She just wanted this stupid trip to end. The twins had enjoyed the penguins cavorting in the surf, and it would break their little hearts to see one crushed, but she thought she would notice a great big bird before she ran it over.

Fortunately, it was the last day of David's conference, and tomorrow they would commence the long drive home.

Things stretched out longer than she'd anticipated. Turned out that the American border guards didn't take kindly to the smuggling of endangered species. Kiki kept explaining that she hadn't brought the penguin intentionally, that she had no idea how it could have hung on to the undercarriage for so many thousands of miles, but her protests did not go over well. The US government took issue with illegal aliens, human or otherwise.
