~Bear by Dragon~

Sascha doesn't usually let anyone know. You can't get close to him, so you'll never stumble on his secrets. He wasn't always a confirmed bachelor, though.

He didn't look so tough when he married my mama. He looked clean-cut and well-groomed, and he used to smile then. He smiled a lot, big, happy grins. He bought the bear when mama got pregnant with me. For a long while it sat, pristine and fluffy, in the white bassinet they bought. He was ready. Sascha would have been a great father to me.

But I never came, not so you would know. I got close, but all I did was take Mama away with me again. After a while, Sascha took the bear from my empty bassinet, put it in his bed, and stopped being friendly.

The magazine called up and suggested I do something to show off his sensitive side, even in jest. Before preparing for the shot, I contemplated bringing a variety of items for him to hold, props that might fit the description, but when my eye rested upon my childhood teddy it seemed the most fitting way to complete the request.

I anticipated some degree of reluctance on his part. His image had thus far been so rigidly defined in terms of Samson-like physical strength. The public's conception of him had thus, until now, been rather a one-dimensional one, quite static. He was a brutal warrior but not much else was known about him.

As it turns out, I had nothing to worry about. While setting up the lighting, he looked downward and spied the teddy bear, which I had thrown out of the back of my car without much care, intending to set it in a better location at some later point. In one fluid motion, he reached for the bear, grasping it by the neck, and then cradling the animal held it against his body.

Who needs Build-a-Bear?

I had this bear, I called him "Grrrr," when I was a boy. At night the bear listened to me talk about my dreams and nightmares, and protected me.

Now I will pass it on to my son. I hope "Grrrr" will once again listen as intently.
